Opinion: The Importance of Government Relations for the IBEW LU 424

In today’s rapidly evolving political and economic climate, the importance of strong government relations for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 424 (IBEW LU 424) cannot be overstated. As a union that represents highly skilled electrical workers across Canada, the IBEW LU 424 must be at the table—not on the menu—when governments at all levels make decisions affecting labour, infrastructure, training, and energy policy.

IBEW LU 424 has demonstrated the importance of these relationships through active lobbying on a number of critical issues. The Local has advocated for the implementation and enforcement of Fair Wage policies, taken a strong stand against Double Breasting practices that undermine collective bargaining, and pushed for legislation to support Card Check that protect workers' rights to have union representation. Beyond labour law, LU 424 has been a voice in support of major industrial projects such as the Teck Resources Oil Sands Mine, the next phase of the NWR Refinery and the development of Small Modular Reactors—both of which hold the potential to create good-paying, unionized jobs and secure Alberta’s place in the future energy economy.

Government relations are not about partisanship; they are about partnership. Whether it's advocating for investments in public infrastructure, renewable energy projects, or skills training, the IBEW LU 424 plays a vital role in ensuring that working people have a voice in shaping policies that impact their jobs, families, and futures. By maintaining open lines of communication with elected officials, the IBEW LU 424 can help steer legislation in a direction that promotes good-paying union jobs, fair labor standards, and workplace safety.

The strength of our union lies not only in our collective bargaining power but in our ability to influence the broader economic and social policies that shape the labour market. That’s why government relations are essential—not only to protect the rights of our current members but to ensure future generations of workers have the same opportunities to build a career with dignity.

From fair wage policies to apprentice funding, from procurement standards to energy transition planning, strong government relations ensure the IBEW LU 424 can help shape a future where labour is respected, skills are valued, and no worker is left behind. If we’re not engaging with government, we’re giving someone else the power to speak on our behalf— and they may not have our best interests at heart.

Strong, consistent engagement with government isn’t optional—it’s a core responsibility of modern union leadership.
